An Empty Urn

This song was written for my mother on the occasion of her 75th birthday.  Read the lyrics, and I think you'll understand what kind of a person she has been.  Suffice it to say, there were a number of people in the room at her party when this was first sung who could identify with various verses.

As I wandered along in this world
I stumbled upon someone who was hurting
But their wound had been healed
And standing beside them was an empty urn

Then I saw that the urn had been filled
With a balm of healing, poured out for others
To know something good in this world
An urn that is willing to empty itself and

I wandered along on my path
I stumbled upon someone who was grieving
But they had found comfort at last
And standing beside them was an empty urn

And I saw that the urn had been filled
With the wine of gladness, poured out for others
To know something good in this world
An urn that is willing to empty itself and

I wandered along, as I went
I stumbled upon someone who was thirsty
But their thirst had been quenched
And standing beside them was an empty urn

Then I saw that the urn had been filled
With a cup of cold water, poured out for others
To know something good in this world
An urn that is willing to empty itself and

I wandered along, and then
I stumbled upon someone who was lonely
But they had found friendship again
And standing beside them was an empty urn

And I saw that the urn had been filled
With the oil of God’s presence, poured out for others
To know something good in this world
An urn that is willing to empty itself and

I wandered along and I knew
When I stumble upon someone who is hurting
There is but one thing to do
Stand along aside them as an empty urn

An urn that will always be filled
If it is willing to pour out for others
To be something good in this world
Then, like my mother, I’ll never be an empty urn
